Part 4: Successfully Navigatinga Consulting Career Path

A Practical Guide for thePassionate Professional

January 30, 2026

Dear Friends,

We have reached the culmination of our series on the future of professional services. We have examined the state of the industry, the grueling cons, and the undeniable pros. But if you are a passionate professional, the final question remains: How do you actually succeed?

Success in the accounting and consulting industries requires a radical departure from the status quo. You cannot simply out-work the competition; you must out-care them.

The standard corporate playbook often breeds insecurity. Professionals hoard client relationships to protect their value. I experienced this friction firsthand. Despite years of driving massive growth and thriving in business development, I was passed over for Partnership. It stung, but it was the catalyst I needed to start Connacht Ventures and fully embrace my own philosophy.

I am a passionate advocate for developing teams, based on one counterintuitive secret: to grow, you must constantly train your people to replace you.

When you invest aggressively in your junior consultants—teaching them not just the analytical frameworks, but the emotional intelligence required to truly understand client needs—you elevate the entire firm. When you make your current role obsolete by raising up those beneath you, you free yourself to focus on the strategic horizon.

This requires immense empathy and a commitment to principles over profits. In their seminal book, The Trusted Advisor, David Maister and his co-authors point out that trust is a function of credibility, reliability, and intimacy, divided by self-orientation1. When your self-orientation—your desire to protect your own territory—is too high, trust plummets.

I see the power of holistic, empathetic leadership daily in my own home. My wife, a fiercely successful fashion designer, navigates her demanding industry while setting an incredible, strong example for our two teenage daughters. She leads with creativity, strength, and grace. That is the kind of leadership we need in business.

If your legacy in consulting is just a high utilization rate, you have failed the industry. If your legacy is a team of empathetic, brilliant advisors who carry the weight of their clients' worlds, you have built something enduring.

Make the decision switch today. Lead with principles. Train your replacements. Empathy is your ultimate competitive advantage.

Best Wishes,
Jack
